That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Nikro Coil Cleaning: The Katy Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Nikro-compatible coil cleaning assemblies for residential HVAC systems across Katy, with typical installed pricing between $340 and $580 depending on coil access and contamination level. Most calls we field for this are same-day completions because the part failure shows up fast once the coil stops transferring heat. Homeowners usually notice it first as a house that won’t cool below 78 degrees despite the compressor running nonstop, or a sudden spike in their July electric bill that outpaces even Texas summer norms.

Which Nikro Models This Applies To

Nikro’s coil cleaning equipment breaks into two residential-relevant lines: the 8-series rotary brush systems and the 10-series negative-pressure extractors. The coil cleaning head itself is where most Katy homeowners need help, specifically the 861-A and 861-B brush assemblies and the 1051 vacuum-driven spray wands. The 861-A fits coils up to 18 inches deep; the 861-B handles deeper A-coils common in 4-ton systems installed in Cinco Ranch and Grand Lakes builds from 2015 to 2020.

Check your Nikro label on the motor housing, not the wand extension. The motor block tells us the series, which determines brush head compatibility. OEM Nikro brushes run $89 to $140 retail; we also carry aftermarket heads from Guardsman that fit the same keyed shaft and meet the same 0.010-inch wire tolerance. The aftermarket saves roughly $30 but wears 15 to 20 percent faster on Texas coils, which tend to load up with cottonwood fuzz in spring and baked-on dust by August. We stock both on our Katy trucks and will show you the side-by-side before you choose.

Signs Your Nikro Coil Cleaning Is Failing

Signs Your Nikro Coil Cleaning Is Failing
  • The brush head stalls or chatters against the coil fins. This usually means the drive cable has developed flat spots from running bent, or the universal joint at the brush head has dried out. Either way, forcing it will flatten aluminum fins and turn a $400 cleaning into a $2,100 coil replacement.
  • Water or chemical drips from the supply registers after cleaning. The spray wand’s internal check valve has cracked or the O-ring at the quick-connect has hardened. On Nikro 10-series units, that O-ring is a #213 Buna-N, but the housing threads strip easily if you overtighten chasing the leak.
  • The vacuum motor pulls strong but no debris reaches the collection bag. The separator cone inside the Nikro head is likely cracked, or the 2.5-inch hose has a split at the stress relief where it enters the canister. We see this on units stored in Katy garage attics where summer heat degrades the hose compound.
  • Chemical smell persists for days after cleaning. The coil wasn’t rinsed at proper pressure, or the Nikro spray tip is atomizing cleaner into mist too fine to fall out of the airstream. This is a application error, not always a parts failure, but it means the cleaning head settings need recalibration.
  • The flex shaft binds and won’t feed past the first bend in the plenum. The shaft liner has delaminated from heat exposure, or the guide ball at the tip has worn undersize and is catching on sheet metal burrs. In older Katy homes near Old Town, we find galvanized ductwork with rough interior seams that accelerate this wear.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Parts Range Installed Total
Nikro 861-A brush assembly (OEM) $89 - $140 $340 - $420
Nikro 861-B deep-coil brush (OEM) $110 - $165 $380 - $480
1051 spray wand with check valve $75 - $120 $320 - $400
Full head assembly, separator cone, hose refresh $180 - $260 $480 - $580

The spread depends on two things: how much of the assembly needs replacement, and how tight the coil access is. Attic-mounted air handlers in Katy’s newer builds, like those in Cane Island or Elyson, typically need 45 minutes of additional labor to drop the plenum panel safely. We quote the full installed price in writing before touching a screw, per Haven Standard Clause 1. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, documented on the invoice you sign before we start.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can verify your Nikro model number, inspect the brush head for visible wire loss, and check the hose for splits without risk. What we don’t recommend is removing the drive cable from its housing or attempting to swap the separator cone. The cable stores rotational energy even when the motor’s off, and the cone housing on 10-series units is under spring tension that can separate suddenly. We’ve been called to jobs in Katy where a homeowner’s attempt to “just change the brush” ended with a stripped shaft key and a $680 repair instead of a $340 one.

The before photo does the talking. Everything after that is just paperwork. Our technicians pull the camera before the first panel comes off, so you see what we see. Call (346) 666-7165 when you’re ready to match the part to your unit and get a written price.
